About Lake Murray Water Level
Lake Murray is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the eastern United States, located in central South Carolina just west of Columbia, the state capital. Created by the construction of the Saluda Dam (now known as Lake Murray Dam) on the Saluda River in 1930, the lake covers approximately 50,000 acres with 650 miles of shoreline.
At the time of its completion, the Lake Murray Dam was the largest earthen dam in the world. With a full pool elevation of 358 feet above sea level, the lake provides hydroelectric power through the Saluda Hydroelectric Plant managed by Dominion Energy. The lake is also a key water supply source for the greater Columbia metropolitan area.
Lake Murray is known for some of the best striped bass fishing on the East Coast. Each spring, massive schools of striped bass congregate in the Saluda River arm, creating a world-class fishing event that attracts anglers from across the country. Other popular species include largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream.
The lake is a major recreation hub for the Columbia area, with boating, swimming, water skiing, and wakeboarding being popular activities. Dreher Island State Park is a popular destination on the lake. Lake Murray also hosts spectacular fireworks displays and boat parades during holidays.
