About Lake Hartwell Water Level
Lake Hartwell is a major reservoir on the Savannah River basin, straddling the border between South Carolina and Georgia. Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1963 with the completion of Hartwell Dam, the lake covers 56,000 acres with 962 miles of shoreline.
With a full pool elevation of 660 feet above sea level, Lake Hartwell is the uppermost lake in the three-lake Savannah River chain (Hartwell, Russell, and Thurmond). The lake provides hydroelectric power, flood control, and water supply to communities in both states.
Lake Hartwell is home to Clemson University, which sits on its shores, and hosts numerous bass fishing tournaments. The lake is particularly famous for largemouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, crappie, and bream. Clemson's campus and Memorial Stadium overlook the lake.
Popular recreation areas include Sadlers Creek State Park, Coneross Park, and Twin Lakes Recreation Area. The lake's many coves and islands provide excellent opportunities for boating, camping, and water sports.
