Frequently Asked Questions

What are US Water Levels?

US Water Levels is a comprehensive real-time dashboard that tracks water elevations, flow rates (discharge), and temperatures for thousands of lakes, reservoirs, and rivers across all 50 US states. Our data is sourced directly from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) federal sensor network and updated daily.

How often is the water level data updated?

Our systems sync with the USGS Water Services API daily. This means the water level, temperature, and flow data you see on our site reflects the most recent daily values reported by each monitoring station. Some stations report more frequently, but our dashboard focuses on daily average values for consistency.

How do I find a dam or reservoir near me?

Use our search bar at the top of the page to search by name, or browse by state using the directory above. Each water body page includes exact GPS coordinates and a Google Maps embed with "Get Directions" functionality so you can navigate directly to any lake, reservoir, or river monitored by USGS.

What does "elevation" mean for a lake or reservoir?

Elevation (measured in feet above sea level) represents the surface level of the water body. For reservoirs, this is compared against the "full pool elevation" — the maximum designed water level. When the current elevation is near full pool, the reservoir is considered full. A significantly lower elevation may indicate drought conditions.

About the National Hydrology Dashboard

The US Water Levels National Hydrology Dashboard provides free, real-time access to water level data for lakes, reservoirs, and rivers across the United States. Whether you're planning a fishing trip to Texas lakes, checking California reservoir levels during drought season, or monitoring river flows for kayaking safety, our dashboard aggregates the latest hydrological data from USGS sensors in one easy-to-use platform.

Our coverage spans all 50 states with 12,158+ actively monitored water bodies. Each location page provides current water elevation, surface temperature, discharge rate, interactive maps, GPS coordinates, and answers to frequently asked questions about the water body.
